Peloponnisos is the southern peninsula of Greece joined to the rest of the Greek mainland by the Isthmus of Corinth. The name is derived from Pelopos Nisos meaning the Island of Pelops, a legendary hero. In medieval times the area became known as "Moria" and it is still sometimes called by that name.
Peloponnisos is rich in both history and culture: The Mycenaean Civilisation flourished there, Olympia (the birthplace of the Olympic Games) and Sparta (the home of King Leonidas and the 300 Spartans) are located there, and the world famous Kalamata olives are produced there. Greece's struggle for independence in 1821 also began in Peloponnisos.
